FAQ’s

Are reptiles good pets?

Yes — when cared for correctly. Many reptiles are calm, fascinating, and relatively low maintenance compared to traditional pets. The key is proper research, correct setup, and long-term commitment.

What is the best reptile for a beginner?

It depends on your space, budget, and confidence level. Beginner-friendly species often include:
• Bearded Dragon
•Corn Snake
•Leopard Gecko
•Crested Gecko

We’ll always recommend a species that matches your lifestyle — not just what looks impressive.

Can children have reptiles?

Reptiles can make fantastic family pets, but an adult must be responsible for daily care, heating equipment, and feeding.

Do you sell to first-time keepers?

Yes — if the species is suitable and the correct setup is purchased. We may decline a sale if we believe the welfare of the animal could be compromised.

What do I need before buying a reptile?

You should have the enclosure fully set up and tested before bringing your animal home. This usually includes:
•Enclosure (correct size)
•Heat source
•Thermostat
•UVB lighting (for most reptiles)
•Substrate
•Hides and decor
•Digital thermometer & hygrometer
All set ups sold by Hellfire Exotics are required to be built and maintaining the required temperatures/humidity for 48hrs before taking one of our animals home.
If you have purchased your set up elsewhere we require photographic evidence of the enclosure and the temperatures before we can sell you an animal.

Why is UVB lighting important?

UVB lighting helps reptiles produce vitamin D3, which allows them to absorb calcium properly. Without it, they can develop serious health issues such as metabolic bone disease.

We recommend replacing UVB bulbs every 12 months (or sooner depending on brand).

Do you test UVB bulbs?

Yes — bring your bulb in and we can test its output to check if it still provides adequate UV levels.

Can you help me choose the right enclosure?

Absolutely. We’ll advise based on adult size, behaviour, and heating requirements — not just what fits today.

What do reptiles eat?

It varies by species. Diet types include:
•Live insects
•Frozen rodents
•Fresh vegetables
•Fruit (species dependent)
•Prepared diets (for some geckos & amphibians)
We have print outs with species specific safe foods for you to take away.

Do you sell live food?

Yes — we stock fresh live food as well as frozen feeders, prepared diets and supplements to ensure balanced nutrition.

How often should reptiles be fed?

Feeding frequency depends on species, age, and metabolism. Juveniles eat more frequently than adults. We’ll provide a feeding schedule when you purchase.

How long do reptiles live?

Many reptiles live 10–20 years, and some much longer. They are a long-term commitment.

How do I know if my reptile is unwell?

Signs may include:
•Loss of appetite
•Lethargy
•Weight loss
•Swelling
•Abnormal shedding

If you’re unsure, contact us or consult a reptile-experienced vet.
